Speaking to reporters in Delhi, United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice urged Pakistan to recognize and play its role in bringing to justice the terrorists that planned and orchestrated the deadly Mumbai attacks that left nearly 200 dead.
Protesters in India have held rallies demanding the government answer questions concerning an apparent security and intelligence breakdown that left Mumbai vulnerable to such an attack.
On Tuesday it was revealed that India may have been warned up to a month prior to the Mumbai attacks that such an event could occur. According to U.S. officials India was told about specific targets and the use of boats to transport the terrorists.
Last week at least ten terrorists entered Mumbai from the sea and carried out attacks at ten separate locations, many of which were on the U.S. list of targets.
Blame was quickly placed on Pakistan which has denied any involvement in the attacks yet the lone surviving terrorist has admitted to being part of the Pakistani-based Lashkar-e-Toiba group. While Pakistan has expressed outrage with the attacks they have also condemned the “unsubstantiated allegations made in haste against Pakistan.”
