Charlie Weis will be on the sideline for a fifth year at Notre Dame following the school’s decision to retain the football coach despite yet another subpar season.
In a statement released by Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said, “Though this past season fell short of the expectations that all of us have for our football program, I am confident that Charlie has a strong foundation in place for future success and that the best course of action is to move forward under his leadership.”
Following a miserable season two years ago in which the Notre Dame football team posted a 3-9 record Weiss promised to have the program ready for 2008. Despite a favorable schedule that had several light programs the Irish posted a 6-6 mark including an embarrassing home loss to Syracuse before being drubbed by USC in their final game.
In his four years at Notre Dame Weis has compiled a 28-21 record. While he guided the Irish to BCS bowl games in his first two years they were blown out in each.
