Charlie Weis to Return as Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football Coach Next Season

Charlie Weis will return next year as head football coach for Notre Dame, according to reports on Wednesday.

"Though this past season fell short of the expectations that all of us have for our football program, I am confident that Charlie has a strong foundation in place for future success and that the best course of action is to move forward under his leadership," athletic director Jack Swarbrick said in a statement released by the university Wednesday.

Weis has come off of his second consecutive disappointing season and received a lot of speculation about a possible firing due to his team's lack of success. The Fighting Irish began the season 4-1, but ended with a 6-6 record.

Weis has seven years left on a 10-year contract worth $30-40 million signed midway through his first season. In his first two seasons at ND, he earned a 19-4 record, taking the Irish to the Fiesta Bowl and Sugar Bowl. In his first season, he earned the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award.

However, over his last two seasons, his Irish team has been 9-15, the worst two-year stretch in the storied history of the Notre Dame football program. In addition, quarterback Jimmy Clausen, one of the most-hyped high school football recruits in recent history, has started the majority of these games, adding to the team's disappointment.

Weis, the former New England Patriots offensive coordinator, has a record of 28-21 in four years, a .571 winning percentage, which is slightly worse than his two predecessors, Tyrone Willingham and Bob Davie.

In Weis' four seasons, only eight of Notre Dame's 28 victories came against teams that finished the season with a winning record. The Irish have recently gone 1-16 against teams that finished with a winning record.

Last week, Notre Dame fell 24-23 to Syracuse, the school's first-ever loss to an eight-loss team in their history. Last season, Weis' team lost in triple-overtime to Navy, ending an NCAA-record 43-game winning streak over the Midshipmen. They also suffered a pair of 38-0 losses to Michigan and USC, the school's two biggest archrivals.
