Vermont Named Healthiest State, South Dominates Bottom of the Barrel

The American Public Health Association and the Partnership for Prevention have unveiled their annual list of healthiest states and Vermont has claimed the top spot and they were joined by several Northeastern states in the top ten.

The report took into account factors that included health insurance coverage, immunization coverage, obesity, smoking rates, infectious disease rates, binge drinking, air pollution and crime levels.

Vermont was noted for their lower than average obesity rate and their public health spending as well as its low crime level and high school graduation.

Following Vermont in the report were Hawaii, New Hampshire, Minnesota, Utah, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Idaho and Maine.

At the bottom of the list Louisiana hit bottom at #50, replacing Mississippi who improved one spot yet still boasts the highest obesity rate in the nation at 33 percent. The two southern states had plenty of regional neighbors on the list as South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, Arkansas and Georgia were all in the bottom ten. Texas, Oklahoma and Nevada were the other states in the less than desirable bottom ten.
