The Heisman Trophy candidates for the 2008 college football season will be announced on Saturday, according to reports.
The winner of the 74th annual Heisman Trophy will be announced on Monday, December 15 at the Nokia Theatre Times Square in New York. The prestigious award is given to college football's most outstanding player.
The frontrunners for the award mainly reign from the Big 12 conference as three quarterbacks sit atop the list: Texas' Colt McCoy, Oklahoma's Sam Bradford and Texas Tech's Graham Harrell.
McCoy has completed 291-of-375 passes for 3,445 yards and 32 TDs (7 INTs). He leads the Longhorns with 576 rushing yards and 10 TDs. He is third in the nation in passing efficiency (179.19) and sixth in total offense (335.08 yards per game).
Bradford completed 268-for-393 passes for 4,080 yards and a Sooners record and nation-leading 46 TDs (6 INTs). He is second in the nation in passing efficiency (190.97) and fourth in total offense (344.83 yards per game).
Harrell has completed 406-of-568 for a nation's best 4,774 yards and 41 TDs (7 INTs). He is ninth in the nation in passing efficiency (163.04) and second in total offense (390.75 yards per game).
As a collective, McCoy, Bradford and Harrell have led their respective offenses to be ranked in the top 11 in the nation for passing offense, total offense and scoring offense.
One of the biggest recipients of the high-powered offenses in the Big 12 is Harrell's favorite target, Michael Crabtree, widely considered the best wide receiver in the nation. Crabtree, who won the Biletnikoff Award last year, has caught 93 passes for 1,135 yards and 18 TDs for the Red Raiders.
Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, last year's Heisman Trophy winner, is still in the hunt due to the proficiency of Florida's offense this season. Although he does not have the gaudy statistics that he had last season, Tebow leads an offense that is statistically better and leads the Gators to the SEC Championship Game, something they did not reach last season.
Tebow has completed 160-of-246 passes for 2,299 yards for 25 TDs and just two interceptions. He ran for 507 yards and 12 TDs. He is fifth in the nation in passing efficiency (175.45) and leads an offense that is No. 1 in the SEC in rushing, scoring and total yards.
Iowa running back Shonn Greene has emerged as arguably the nation's best rusher. He helped lead the Hawkeyes to defeat then-No. 3 Penn State 24-23, knocking out their national championship hopes. Greene is second in the nation with 1,729 yards on 278 carries for eight touchdowns.
