Kenya Prime Minister Raila Odinga Calls for Removal of Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe

As Zimbabwe continues to sink further into catastrophe Kenya’s Prime Minister Raila Odinga has called for the removal of the country’s embattled President Robert Mugabe.

Odinga has said Mugabe has shown no signs of agreeing to a power-sharing deal he signed earlier this year and as a result other African nations should push for his removal. In that power-sharing deal Mugabe would retain the office of the presidency while opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai would become prime minister. Problems cropped up almost immediately as debate on how cabinet posts should be appointed.

The Kenyan PM has said if other African nations put pressure on Mugabe to step down he would have no choice.

Tsvangirai won the presidential election back in March but because he did not secure a large enough majority a runoff was declared. With just days before the final vote Tsvangirai removed himself from the race, declaring Mugabe had used violence and intimidation to deter opposition voters from voting.

Mugabe declared himself the winner but he quickly found himself in power-sharing talks after several African countries demanded Tsvangirai hold a position within the government. Mugabe and Tsvangirai eventually came to an agreement but that has never been upheld.

Zimbabwe’s economy is in shambles and they have recently experienced a cholera outbreak that has killed more than 500 people. Most of the country lacks clean drinking water and sewage runs in the streets while the health sector has no medicine to treat those suffering.
