Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has put to rest speculation that he would be returning to the presidency earlier than the scheduled 2012 election, declaring he still hasn’t decided if he wants to run for office.
Putin served the maximum two-term limit as president and was replaced by Dmitry Medvedev following elections earlier this year. Shortly after Medvedev took office he appointed Putin as prime minister, leaving many to speculate that Putin would still be calling the shots for the country while awaiting the next presidential election.
In addition to appointing Putin as prime minister, Medvedev has tried to push through a law that would extend the presidential term from four years to six years, another sign that Putin may be preparing for another term.
For his part, Putin has said he has not thought about the prospect of returning to the presidential office, saying everybody had their role in the current administration and those duties had to be met before any decision about 2012 was made.
