Sean Avery has apologized for his comments on ex-girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert. The hockey player was suspended indefinitely from the NHL Tuesday after making “inappropriate public comments, not pertaining to the game.”
“I should not have made those comments and I recognize that they were inappropriate. It was a bad attempt to build excitement for the game, but I am now acutely aware of how hurtful my actions were,” Avery says in a statement to People magazine.
Avery made the comments Wednesday morning telling reporters, “I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don’t know what that’s about. Enjoy the game tonight.”
Avery and Cuthbert briefly dated before the actress ended the relationship in August 2007. She is currently dating hockey star Dion Phaneuf.
The Dallas Stars player is suspended until a hearing with an NHL commissioner on Thursday.
