NFL Schedule Thursday Night: Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers Meet in AFC West Showdown

The NFL feature on Thursday night include two of the worst teams in the league yet one of those clubs still has a shot at the playoffs as the San Diego Chargers (4-8) face the Oakland Raiders (3-9) in an AFC West showdown.

San Diego will likely need to win out and pray for a collapse from the Denver Broncos to reach the AFC playoffs and with the Chargers final four games being at home against the Raiders, on the road for the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers and at home against the Broncos it could be possible.

While the Broncos have the Chiefs at home on Sunday they still have the Carolina Panthers on the road and the Buffalo Bills at home before facing the Charger sin the last game of the regular season.

Of course this all rests on the Chargers winning out and judging by their season so far the prospect isn’t likely. The Chargers are coming off a disappointing home loss to the Atlanta Falcons, a game they should have won but found a way to lose. That’s been the theme of the Chargers season as seven of their losses have been by seven points or less, four of those were three points or less.

San Diego did knock off the Raiders in Week 4 in Oakland and should do the same on Thursday night as their AFC West rival continues to struggle through their disappointing season. While the Chargers have lost close games the Raiders have lost six games by more than ten points including losses of 27, 31 and 19.

The Chargers will look for a balanced attack from Philip Rivers, who actually has the NFL’s second highest passer rating (behind Tony Romo) and LaDainian Tomlinson. Tomlinson was shut down by the Falcons last week but he may find things easier on Thursday night as the Raiders have the 29th ranked rushing defense in the league.

San Diego’s defense can almost certainly gear up for the running game of the Raiders as JaMarcus Russell has led the NFL’s worst passing offense. Justin Fargas has been their most consistent running back this year and played well in the Raiders last two games. Darren McFadden was to be the featured back in the Raiders’ offense but after rushing for 164 yards against the Chiefs in Week 2 he hasn’t collected more than 42 yards rushing in the games he played since.

The game will be played in San Diego with kickoff scheduled for 8:15 p.m. ET.
