PGA Club Professionals Gain Free Entry Into National Golf Championship

PGA club professionals and assistant professionals at golf courses throughout the United States can gain free entry into the national championship of the U.S. Putting Tour, which features a $10,000 cash prize for the winner, it was announced this week.

Club professionals and assistants can get free entry into the 2011 USPT Championship, to be held in Carlsbad, California in September, by holding official qualifying events for the championship at the golf courses where they work.

"PGA professionals are great golfers, as well as instructors and business people," said USPT president, Jim Hartley. "The U.S. Putting Tour wants to give them a way to compete for the $10,000 first-place prize without even paying an entry fee."

When PGA professionals hold USPT qualifying putting tournaments, they can decide the format for their own event and the entry fee. Once a winner is determined, the PGA professional qualifies the winner and themselves by sending in a check for $300 from the entry fees, which puts both participants into the second round of the putting championship.

Anyone else can hold a USPT qualifying event, as well. The list includes men's and ladies' clubs, charity golf tournaments, corporate golf outings, practice facility managers, and entrepreneurs interested in making part-time golf income.

Golfers have the option of entering the USPT Championship directly. They can select one of three days on which to play their first round. If they make the cut, they will advance to the second round and golfers making the second-round cut will play in the final round on Friday, September 30. Golfers can enter at the USPT website. The early entry fee is $100.

The USPT Championship is open to all golfers, male and female, amateur and professional, 13 years of age and older.
