Chile Rattled By Strong Earthquake

The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed a 6.0 magnitude earthquake rattled southern Chile late Sunday. The tremor was center about 23 miles south of Concepcion at a depth of 10 miles. There were no reports of deaths, injuries or damages.

Sunday was the one-year anniversary of the deadly 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck near Concepcion and sparked a tsunami. That tremor caused major damages, left 521 people dead and left thousands of Chileans homeless.

Chilean President Sebastian Pinera attended a commemoration ceremony Sunday and replaced a flag battered in the disaster with a new flag to symbolize the tenacity of the country. “This is a strong country which in spite of adversity got on its feet, walked, dried its tears and confronted the problems of today and the challenges of the future,” he said.
