Head of Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Alexiy II, Dies at 79

Patriarch Alexiy II, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, has died at the age of 79 after battling a sickness for some time.

Alexiy II became Patriarch in 1990, just before the fall of communism, and restored the prominence of the Russian Orthodox Church in the country following years of suppression. In the years that followed communism Alexiy II became known for his strong allegiance to Russian policy.

During that period Alexiy II sought to bring together the scattered branches of the Russian Orthodox Church and the 100 million Russian Orthodox members.

There have been no funeral arrangements made as of yet.
