WellPet has issued a recall for certain kinds of their Wellness natural cat food. The company said the affected products may not have adequate amounts of vitamin B1, also known as thiamine. The recall includes all flavors and sizes of Wellness Canned Cat with best by dates of April 14, 2013 through September 30, 2013; and all sizes of Wellness Canned Cat Chicken and Herring with best by dates of November 10, 2013 and November 17, 2013.
“WellPet is committed to delivering the very best in pet food nutrition, as nothing is more important than the well-being of our dogs and cats. So when we found through product quality testing that specific product runs of our Wellness canned cat food might contain less than adequate levels of thiamine (also known as Vitamin B1), we decided to voluntarily recall them,” WellPet CEO Tim Callahan said in a letter posted on the company’s website.
“Speaking on behalf of our entire Company, I apologize for any concerns this may have caused you,” he added.
Affected products can be returned for a full refund. Symptoms of thiamine deficiency in cats include vomiting, weight loss, seizures, drooling and walking in circles.
