Bernstein Liebhard LLP Supports FDA Recommendation that Denture Cream Manufacturers Stop Using Zinc

On February 23, 2011, Dr. Steven Silverman, director of the FDA’s Office of Compliance for the Center for Devices and Radiological health sent a Notice and Recommended Action letter to denture adhesive manufacturers requesting that they stop using zinc in their denture cream products. Dr. Silverman informed the manufacturers that the FDA has received numerous reports of adverse events relating to denture cream use, and asked for “their assistance in dealing with this public health issue.” The lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP are currently investigating and litigating cases on behalf of clients against the denture adhesive manufacturers, which include Proctor & Gamble (the maker of Fixodent) and GlaxoSmithKline (the maker of Super Poligrip).

Zinc Toxicity and Denture Cream Adhesives

Although zinc toxicity has been a known side effect of denture cream use for some time, recently the dangers associated with denture creams containing zinc have received increased media attention. Zinc toxicity can cause severe neurological damage. Early symptoms include pain and numbness in the hands and feet. With over 35 million Americans using denture creams, the lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP applaud the FDA for taking action and for recognizing that zinc poisoning poses a serious threat to public health and safety.

Bernstein Liebhard LLP has been at the forefront of the denture cream litigation, representing consumers nationwide since the dangers associated with its use were first exposed. Since that time, Bernstein Liebhard LLP has provided a wealth of consumer information concerning the risks associated with denture cream use on its website, consumerinjurylawyers.com. If you or a loved one uses Fixodent, Poligrip, or another brand of denture cream and suffers from symptoms of zinc poisoning, such as pain and numbness in the hands and feet, you may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages and other injuries.
