AP Top 25 College Football Schedule Friday: #12 Ball State Cardinals Face Buffalo Bulls for MAC Title

The #12 Ball State Cardinals (12-0, 8-0) will look to maintain their perfect record and bolster their bowl bid when they take on the Buffalo Bulls (7-5, 5-3) for the MAC title on Friday night at Ford Field in Michigan.

Both teams are making their first appearance in the MAC title game and for the Cardinals a win could elevate them further in the polls and increase the likelihood of appearing in a more prolific bowl game when invitations are extended on Sunday.

Ball State ran through the MAC West with sensational play from quarterback Nate Davis who has thrown for 3095 yards and 25 touchdowns and a passer rating of 169.28, sixth in the nation, and running back MiQuale Lewis who collected 1570 rushing yards and 20 TDs. His yards are fourth in the country while he is tied for second in touchdowns.

While Ball State could improve to 13-0 with a win Friday night they are not guaranteed a BCS bowl berth due to the perfect records of other non-BCS schools Utah and Boise State.

Not many people are giving the Bulls much of a chance on Friday but they do have weapons of their own as the offense has averaged just over 30 points per game behind an impressive triple threat. Quarterback Drew Willy has thrown for 2885 yards and 22 touchdowns, running back James Starks has rushed for 1226 yards and 14 TDs and receiver Naaman Roosevelt collected 1196 yards and 10 touchdowns.

The difference on Friday will almost certainly come down to how well each team’s defense can match-up. The Cardinals have the nation’s tenth ranked scoring defense, allowing just 16.7 points per game while Buffalo has struggled on the defensive side of the ball, allowing a bit more than 27 points per contest.

At the heart of the Bulls defensive problems is their inability to stop the run which should bode well for Lewis. Buffalo has allowed 159 yards rushing per game and against a Cardinals squad that averages just under 200 yards per game the ground attack should be seeing plenty of action.

Kick-off is set for 8:00 p.m. ET.
