#1 Alabama Crimson Tide will face the #2 Florida Gators in the SEC Championship Game on Saturday at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The game will take place at 4pm on CBS.
The winner of this game will likely play for the BCS National Championship on Thursday, January 8, 2009 at Dolphin Stadium in Miami.
The Crimson Tide (12-0, 8-0 SEC) have sat atop the BCS rankings since they were released several weeks ago after topping the AP and USA Today Top 25 college football rankings. Alabama soared into the top spot after defeating then-No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs, 41-30, on the road, a game in which they lead UGA 31-0 at halftime.
Although Alabama was expected to return to national prominence with the addition of head coach Nick Saban two years ago, the Crimson Tide's No. 1 ranking was still seen as very rapid.
The Tide was ranked No. 22 in the preseason, but was catapulted into the national spotlight after defeating then-No. 9 Clemson Tigers, 34-10, in their first game of the season at the Georgia Dome. Four weeks later, they defeated UGA and have been ranked No. 1 ever since.
Florida (11-1, 7-1 SEC) was ranked No. 5 in the preseason due mostly to the return of last year's Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow. However, it was the emergence of several other offensive options, such as Chris Rainey, Jeffery Demps and star Percy Harvin, that have been the story for the Gators.
Tebow is expected to be included as one of this year's Heisman Trophy candidates, but is not considered a frontrunner, while Harvin suffered a right ankle sprain against rival Florida State last week and is listed as questionable for Saturday.
Florida enters the game boasting the nation's third-highest scoring offense (46.3 points per game). They lead the SEC in total offense, passing offense and scoring offense. However, Alabama boasts the SEC's best total defense, rushing defense and scoring defense, ranking in the top five nationally in all three categories.
Although Alabama is known as a defensive team, quarterback John Parker Wilson has led their offense, which is led by running back Glen Coffee (1,235 rushing yards) and freshman wide receiver Julio Jones (723 receiving yards).
