After months of declaring they would not hold direct talks with Tutsi rebel leader General Laurent Nkunda the Congolese government has agreed to the provision in an effort to end the violence that has left more than 250,000 people homeless
Nkunda has led his minority Tutsi rebels into battle with government forces as well as Rwandan Hutu FDLR rebels who fled to eastern Congo following the end of the 1994 genocide that left more than 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutus dead.
The Tutsis in the Congo have accused the government of doing nothing to stop the FDLR rebels from attacking them and as a result Nkunda has initiated an aggressive campaign against the Hutu rebels as well as forces that have been backed by the government.
Tutsi troops have continued to advance over the past few months and are now surrounding the city of Goma. It is in Goma that an agreement was made to hold talks on Monday.
Foreign Minister Thambe Mwamba announced the talks saying, “A meeting will take place between representatives of the government of DR Congo and the CNDP under the auspices of the United Nations and the mediator on December 8 in Nairobi in Kenya.”
