#4 Oklahoma Sooners will battle #19 Missouri Tigers in the 2008 Dr. Pepper Big 12 Championship Game at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, MO. The game will take place at 8pm EST on ABC.
Oklahoma (11-1, 7-1 Big 12) and Missouri (9-3, 5-3 Big 12) will meet for the second straight year as the Sooners look to win its third consecutive conference championship. Last season, they defeated Missouri and moved on to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.
Oklahoma entered this week ranked No. 2 in the BCS rankings, catapulting them ahead of the Texas Longhorns and Texas Tech Red Raiders to represent the Big 12 South in the title game. All three teams had a three-way tie with a 7-1 conference record.
On Nov. 11, Texas defeated Oklahoma, 45-35, in the Red River Shootout. Three weeks later, Texas Tech beat Texas, 39-33, at home on a last second touchdown reception by Michael Crabtree. The following week, Oklahoma demolished Texas Tech, 65-21, at home.
The conference may look to change their controversial format for determining ties at the end of the season. Many believe that Texas should have been named to the championship game, because they beat Oklahoma on a neutral field by more points than they lost to Texas Tech.
The two teams enter the game with two of the most proficient offenses in college football, both ranked in the top six in the nation in total offense, passing offense and scoring offense.
The Tigers are led by quarterback Chase Daniel, a 2007 Heisman Trophy candidate, and wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, one of the nation's most talented offensive threats. Daniel's 34 touchdown passes are a career-high, while Maclin leads the nation in all-purpose yards with 205.5 yards per game. Running back Derrick Washington is fourth in the nation with 19 rushing TDs, along with 963 rushing yards.
Sooners quarterback Sam Bradford is considered a frontrunner for this year's Heisman Trophy as he leads the country with 46 touchdowns. He had four last week, breaking the school records for TD passes in a season and a career (82). He leads the nation's top scoring offense (53.8 ppg).
However, Bradford will play against Missouri with a soft cast after tearing ligaments in his non-throwing hand against Oklahoma State. He will have surgery after Saturday's game.
Bradford has one of the best array of receivers in the nation with Joaquin Iglesias, Manuel Johnson and tight end Jermaine Gresham, who have combined for 2,450 yards and 29 TDs. The Sooners will also likely have two 1,000-yard rushers after Saturday as DeMarco Murray leads the team with 1,002 yards and Chris Brown has 988. The two have combined to rush for 31 touchdowns.
