Russian Orthodox Church Elects Bishop Kirill as Temporary Leader

The Russian Orthodox Church has elected popular bishop Kirill as its temporary leader following the death of Patriarch Alexiy II on Friday. Alexiy died of heart failure at the age of 79.

Kirill, whose official title is Metropolitan of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, was elected in secret ballot by the Church’s top body. The decision was made at an emergency meeting in Moscow

The 62-year-old has been serving as the Church’s chief envoy abroad and most recently travelled to Cuba to consecrate a cathedral in Havana.

Kirill had long been seen as the successor to Alexiy. Kirill will be buried on Tuesday at Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior.
