Russian Warship Enters Panama Canal, First Time in more than 60 Years

In what is being described as an act of bravado aimed at the United States, a Russian warship has entered the Panama Canal following its completion of naval maneuvers with Venezuela.

The Admiral Chabanenko entered the Panama Canal on Friday night, the first time a Russian warship had taken the passageway from the Atlantic to the Pacific since World War II. With the United States considering the area within its sphere of influence, the decision to send the warship through the canal is seen as yet another move by Russia to test their strained relationship with the Americans.

Russia has been at odds with the United States since the Americans decision to build a missile defense shield in Poland and the Czech Republic. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev call the move a direct threat to the sovereignty of Russia and vowed to aim their own missiles at the bases.

Medvedev then agreed to carry out joint naval exercises with Venezuela, another move that upset the United States. It was after those exercises were completed that the warship entered the Canal, the first time a Russian warship has done so since 1944.

The last time such an event took place was when the United States and Russia were allies against Germany’s Hitler during the Second World War
