Sri Lanka Involved in Intense Fighting with Tamil Tigers Over Kilinochchi

Sri Lankan troops have engaged in intense fighting with the Tamil Tigers rebel forces as the two sides engage in a battle over the rebel stronghold Kilinochchi.

Government troops have used rocket launchers and bombed the rebels with air force artillery in an effort to end the conflict that has endured for several decades. The most recent battle centered on Kilinochchi, long used as the center of their resistance.

The Tamil Tigers have launched counter-attacks against the government troops and both sides are said to have suffered casualties.

For decades the rebels have been fighting for a separate Tamil state yet Sri Lanka has vowed to end the Tigers fight.
