Gang Opens Fire on Philippine Police, at least 16 Killed in Battle

A gang of suspected thieves opened fire on Philippine police officers in a Manila suburb Friday night and the ensuing gun battle killed at least 16 people.

The thieves had been travelling through a residential subdivision when they sensed they were being tailed by officers and engaged the police forces. Armed with M-16s and grenade launchers, the gang of robbers began spraying fire at everything within their sight.

Police have said 12 gang members were killed in the attack as was an officer. At least three civilians in the area were killed including a man and his 7-year-old daughter who had been driving in the area when the gunfire erupted.

It is believed the gang was responsible for recent attacks that left a bank teller dead as well as two guards for an armored truck that had picked up money from a bank on the campus of the University of the Philippines.
