The U.S. justice department is expected to hand down manslaughter and assault charges against five Blackwater guards who killed 17 Iraqis during a September 2007 shootout in Baghdad.
According to the Blackwater, a private U.S. security firm was providing defense for U.S. diplomats in Iraq, the guards were acting in self-defense when they were ambushed by insurgents at an intersection in Baghdad.
An FBI investigation concluded that 14 of the deaths that occurred in the shootout were unjustified. According to witnesses at the scene the guards used no discretion when they opened fire, striking innocent civilians including several children.
Iraqis were outraged by the events and further strained their relationship with U.S. forces in the country.
The exact charges have not been announced but are expected to be revealed on Monday, the same day the five Blackwater guards are expected to surrender to authorities.
