Navy headed into Saturday’s annual affair with Army leading the nation in rushing with an average of 292 yards per game and while the Black Knights knew what was coming there was nothing they could do to stop it as the Midshipmen rolled up 368 yards on the ground to sink their rivals 34-0 for their seventh straight Commander-in-Chief Trophy.
Shun White led the charge for Navy, collecting 147 yards on the ground including a 65-yard touchdown run in the first quarter that gave the Midshipmen a 7-0 lead. White added a touchdown in the second quarter when he took a pass from Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada 18-yards for a score to push the advantage to 17-0.
White wasn’t the only one with a big game for Navy as Eric Kettani gathered 131 yards rushing and his 5-yard touchdown run in the third quarter pushed the advantage to 24-0.
As impressive as the Navy offense was their defense was absolutely devastating as they held Army to just 154 yards of total offense and seven first downs. They held Collin Mooney, the nation’s #11 rusher, to just 55 yards, significantly lower than the 117 yards he had been averaging.
It was fitting that the navy defense provided the final points of the game as Ram Vela returned an interception 68 yards for a touchdown to put an exclamation point on the board.
