Oscar De La Hoya’s Dream Fight Turns to Nightmare as Manny Pacquiao Dominates Golden Boy

In what was being billed as a dream fight between two of boxing’s most recognizable names the outcome of Saturday night’s bout between Manny Pacquiao and Oscar De La Hoya had a nightmare ending for the Golden Boy who failed to answer the bell after eight rounds.

While De La Hoya came into the fight with a clear advantage in height and reach it did little to stop the much quicker and younger Pacquiao who battered the Olympic gold medalist in what proved to be an uneven fight.

Entering the fight Pacquiao, a hero in his native Philippines, never failed to admit he considered De La Hoya his idol but the beating he delivered was evidence there would be no favoritism as he solidified himself as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

At 29-years-old Pacquiao had little trouble moving around the 35-year-old De La Hoya who looked slow and had little power despite looking much bigger. While De La Hoya was dragging Pacquiao couldn’t have looked quicker as he scored at will on a target that tried to chase him down but had no success.

While De La Hoya looked to land a huge blow Pacquiao used combinations and by the end of the eighth round De La Hoya’s left eye was closed and it was evident he wasn’t getting any stronger.

The win improved Paquiao’s record to 48-3-2 with 36 knockouts while De La Hoya fell to 39-6 and will almost certainly face a decision about retirement.
