Manny Pacquiao Stops Oscar De La Hoya in Welterweight Dream Fight

Manny Pacquiao (48-3-2) scored a surprising technical knockout on Saturday night after Oscar De La Hoya (39-6) failed to answer the bell after the eighth round.

Pacquiao entered the fight having jumped two weight classes and had many questioning whether the added pounds would slow his aggressive nature. By the end of the fight it was clear that it was the 35-year-old De La Hoya who had slowed as the Golden Boy chased the elusive Pacquiao but failed to do any damage.

From the start of the fight it was Pacquiao’s ability to get inside De La Hoya, eliminating the former Olympic gold medalist's considerable reach advantage. While inside he delivered blow after blow to De La Hoya who was clearly outmatched by the 29-year-old Pacquiao.

Following the eighth round De La Hoya had been battered and his left eye was closed at which point he failed to stand for the ninth and Pacquiao scored the win.

It was just the second time in De La Hoya’s 16 year professional career that he had been stopped and it may have been his final fight as he indicated he no longer had the physical ability to continue in the sport.

Pacquiao, considered by many to be the best pound-for-pound fighter today, could be lined up to fight Ricky Hatton in what would almost certainly earn him more than the $11 million he took from the fight Saturday.
