Ghana Opens Polls for Presidential and Parliamentary Elections

With President John Kufuor’s second term ending Ghanaians have taken to the polls to elect their new leader and by all indications the race remains extremely close.

Kufuor’s New Patriotic Party has put their hopes on Nana Akufo Addo who has been serving as foreign minister but he is in a close fight with John Atta Mills of the opposition National Democratic Congress.

The election in Ghana has gained added significance following the troubles experienced in Kenya and Zimbabwe over the past year. Many are hoping a peaceful election will restore the faith in democracy that many Africans have lost.

While the two main parties battle for leadership it could be the Convention People’s Party that determines whether either one scores a first-round victory. As a third party they have gained supporters who have become disillusioned with the existing system.
