Venezuela’s opposition parties have rejected a plan by President Hugo Chavez that would have allowed the leader to remain in office as long as he secured election victories.
Chavez is scheduled to leave office in 2012 when his second term expires but he has long expressed a desire to hold the presidency for as long as he could. On Saturday he marked his tenth anniversary of his 1998 election victory and his supporters celebrated outside his presidential palace.
While he celebrated opposition parties issued a joint statement in which their views were clearly expressed, “Fourteen years are sufficient.”
The statement further called Chavez’s reform plans “anti-democratic, unconstitutional and against the national interest.”
Despite the objection of the opposition parties the Chavez’s plans for reforms can still take place as a referendum on the plans could be held as early as February.
