USA Today Top 25 College Football Rankings Week 15: Oklahoma Sooners Claim Top Spot Over Florida Gators
The Oklahoma Sooners edged the Florida Gators by one point to claim the #1 spot in the USA Today Top 25 college football rankings for Week 15. The Sooners captured the Big 12 championship on Saturday with their demolition of the Missouri Tigers while the Gators claimed the SEC title with a win over then #1 Alabama.
In reality the battle for #1 was irrelevant as the Sooners and Gators will settle the matter on the field when they meet Jan. 8 in Miami for the BCS national championship.
Standing on the outside of the all-important top two spots are the Texas Longhorns who held their #3 spot this week. The Longhorns have a legitimate gripe with the rankings as they had already knocked off the Sooners this year but couldn’t slip past them in the polls at the end of the year.
Texas will likely face the Alabama Crimson Tide who dropped to #4 this week after falling to the Gators. The Tide are actually tied with the USC Trojans at #4. USC won the Pac-10 on Saturday after beating up the UCLA Bruins.
USC is already locked into the Rose Bowl where they will face #6 Penn State who won the Big Ten but saw their hopes of a national championship end when they lost to Iowa on a last second field goal.
