What should have been a time of celebration for the Fennville High School basketball team Thursday night turned in to a time of tragedy when star player Wes Leonard collapsed and died. Leonard, 16, made the final score that won Fennville the game over Bridgman High and clinched their perfect season run.
Leonard and his teammates were celebrating on court when he collapsed around 9:10 p.m. He was rushed to Holland Hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced dead over an hour later.
Kent County, Michigan medical examiner David Start told CBS News he determined Leonard’s cause of death to be cardiac arrest due to an enlarged heart.
"Obviously, in the midst of celebration, I think shocking is exactly the word. And certainly our deepest prayers are with Wes and his family,” said Fennville Superintendent Dirk Weeldreyer said Thursday night.
