Israeli Plans to Release Palestinian Prisoners Delayed

Israel’s plan to release more than 200 Palestinian prisoners marking the Muslim holiday of Eid has been delayed. While Israel has blamed the delay on Palestinian leader Mamhoud Abbas that has been disputed by his top aide who said the holdup was on the Israeli side.

The release of 230 Palestinian prisoners was to be a goodwill gesture marking the end of Ramadan but Israel has claimed Abbas wanted the release delayed so that he could be present when the prisoners were released but the Palestinian leader has said he has made no such request.

Palestinians blamed the delay on legal issues on the Israeli side.

The prisoners were scheduled to be released on Tuesday but that could be pushed back for another week. Israel plans to release prisoners of Abbas’s Fatah faction and other prisoners of non-Islamist groups.
