Blackwater Guards Indicted for Deadly 2007 Shooting in Iraq

U.S. authorities have indicted five employees of Blackwater and charged them with 14 counts of manslaughter as well as weapons charges and attempted manslaughter related to a shooting at a busy intersection in Baghdad in Sept. 2007.

The five men had been guards for the security firm hired to protect political dignitaries in Iraq. All five claimed they had been acting in self-defense when they were ambushed by insurgents but an investigation into the shooting revealed they acted with no discretion when they opened fire on civilians, killing 17 people.

On Monday the five guards surrendered to authorities at a federal courthouse in Salt Lake City, Utah.

According to an FBI investigation 14 of the Iraqis killed in the shooting were innocent civilians, some of those victims were children.
