ESPN USA Today College Basketball Top 25 Week 4: UNC Tar Heels Remain #1, UConn and Pittsburgh Hold at #2 and #3
The North Carolina Tar Heels held their spot atop the ESPN USA Today college basketball Top 25 for Week 4 while the Connecticut Huskies and Pittsburgh Panthers did the same, laying claim to the #2 and #3 spots.
North Carolina continues to blast opponents regardless of their quality as the Tar Heels most recent victim, then #12 Michigan State, can attest after a 98-63 pounding. The Tar Heels were a unanimous #1, collecting all 31 first-place votes as Tyler Hansbrough, Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington and Deon Thompson continue to fire on all cylinders.
While UConn held at #2 the Huskies had to survive a serious scare from unranked Buffalo, escaping an upset bid by the Bulls 68-64 on Dec. 4. UConn has Stony Brook up next before their big showdown with Gonzaga on Dec. 20. Hasheem Thabeet continues to average a double-double through the early schedule but may find some resistance when they start Big East play.
The Pittsburgh Panthers continue to get big play from Sam Young, DeJuan Blair and floor general LeVance Fields as they roll over their opponents. Pittsburgh has yet to be challenged this year and likely won’t be tested this week with UMBC on their schedule.
Gonzaga moved up to #4 this week after beating Indiana on Saturday and Duke’s loss. The Bulldogs have six players scoring in double figures and their balanced attack has caused trouble for each team they’ve dropped thus far.
Led by Blake Griffin and his 24.8 PPG and 16.8 RPG the Oklahoma Sooners jumped a spot this week to land at #5. A narrow 73-72 win over the USC Trojans on Dec. 4 and a convincing win over Tulsa on Sunday kept the Sooners unbeaten.
