A United States Navy warship rescued an oil tanker and its crew from suspected pirates over the weekend. The MB Guanabara, carrying 24 crew members, was attacked and boarded by 4 men Friday about 328 nautical miles off the coast of Oman.
The USS Bulkeley and the Turkish warship TCG Giresun were sent to intercept the Japanese-owned vessel. A boarding team from the Bulkeley boarded and secured the tanker after the vessel’s captain confirmed the entire crew was barricaded in the citadel room, or secure compartment. The four suspected pirates were detained. No gunfire was exchanged during the operation.
Last week, Somali pirates hijacked a yacht carrying a Danish couple, their three children and two deckhands. The family was taken hostage and still has not been released.
