Ghana Election Count Continues, Nana Akufo-Addo Holds Slight Lead Over John Atta Mills

With just over 70 percent of the precincts counted Nana Akufo-Addo of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) holds a slight lead over John Atta Mills of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ghana’s presidential election.

Sunday’s presidential election in Ghana was hailed for its peaceful process yet as the results draw closer accusations of fraud have been made and the atmosphere in the country has grown tense. The NDC has said the NPP had plotted to rig the election but those charges have been denied.

While the NPP holds a narrow lead a victory won’t guarantee Nana Akufo-Addo the presidency. If neither candidate secures more than 50 percent of the vote a run-off would be held.

The results of the election will be announced by Wednesday afternoon.

Having served the maximum two-terms President John Kufuor is stepping down in January.
