Zimbabwe’s Opposition MDC Party Says Adviser to Morgan Tsvangirai Abducted

Zimbabwe’s main opposition party Movement for Democratic Change has said a top adviser to leader Morgan Tsvangirai has been abducted while in Harare.

According to witnesses who claimed to see the kidnapping unfold, Gandhi Mudzingwa was approached by nine gunmen into a car on Monday and taken away. The abduction of Mudzingwa is the latest in a string of kidnappings involving MDC activists.

Tsvangirai won Zimbabwe’s presidential election in March but an election commission ruled that he had not secured a large enough majority and that led to a run-off with President Robert Mugabe. With less than a week before the vote was to take place Tsvangirai dropped out, declaring Mugabe had been using violence to intimidate MDC supporters. Stating the elections had been neither free nor fair Tsvangirai appealed to the African Union.

Former South African President Thabo Mbeki initiated talks for a power-sharing government and after several months both sides agreed to a deal. That agreement has never been put in place as Mugabe quickly filled cabinet positions with ministers from his ZANU-PF party, leaving Tsvangirai with lesser posts.

Since the election Zimbabwe has continued to sink further into collapse as the economy experiences staggering inflation while a serious cholera outbreak has already claimed more than 600 lives.

The international community has now stepped up efforts to remove Mugabe from office but he has shown no willingness to go quietly. Mugabe has held the presidency since Zimbabwe gained their independence in 1980 and he has accused the West of plotting to launch an attack within the county to forcefully unseat him.
