Man's icy vodka trip

A Polish man had to be rescued after he drifted out to sea on a sheet of ice holding a bottle of vodka.

Michal Kawolski, 23, wanted to test the strength of the ice forming by the shore after having a few drinks with friends in Gdansk - and was left terrified when it broke off, sweeping him away.

Coastguard spokesman Captain Adam Taflinski said: "He had drifted about a kilometre out to sea by the time we got him. But we were able to get him to safety and he spent the night in hospital being treated for hyperthermia."

A redfaced Michal later said: "Well, I won't be doing that again."
