Francisco "K-Rod" Rodriguez Close to Three-Year Deal with NY Mets

Francisco "K-Rod" Rodriguez is close to signing a three-year deal with the New York Mets, according to reports on Tuesday.

Rodriguez, the free agent closer from the Los Angeles Angels, will reportedly sign the contract worth $37 million this week.

The deal is one year more than the initial offer by the Mets franchise. The latest offer is also $24 million more than the team initially offered Rodriguez. This past season, Rodriguez broke the major league single-season saves record last season with 62.

The Mets are in dire need of bullpen help after the injury of closer Billy Wagner, who will likely miss the 2009 season.

The contract would pay Rodriguez, 26, about $3 million more than he was offered by the Los Angeles Angels in spring training and $6 million less than Wagner's deal with the Mets. Rodriguez earned $10 million last season.
