St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, FL) moves to the top spot in the USA Today Super 25 high school football rankings.
St. Thomas Aquinas defeated South Fork (Stuart, FL), 56-14, in the 5A quarterfinals and will now face Largo in the semifinals.
Four teams dropped out of the rankings this week as the state playoffs throughout the nation offered several key upsets.
The biggest upset was the 26-20 overtime loss by then-No. 9 South Panola (Batesville, MS) to Meridian (MS) in the Mississippi Class 5A state championship. The loss snapped South Panola's state-record 89-game winning streak and dropped them out of the USA Today rankings.
South Panola's winning streak was the third-longest high school streak of all time. Only De La Salle High of Concord, CA (151) and Independence High of Charlotte, NC (109) have won more consecutive games.
Two top five teams also lost this past week during their respective state playoffs. Then-No. 1 Trinity (Euless, TX) lost to then-No. 13 Allen (TX), 34-21, in the Texas 5A-I quarterfinals, while Armwood (Seffner, FL) lost to Plant (Tampa, FL), 17-14, in the Florida 4A quarterfinals.
Then-No. 7 Madison County (FL) lost to Bolles (Jacksonville, FL), 21-7, in the Florida 2A semifinals; then-No. 14 Grayson (Loganville, GA) was upset by Peachtree Ridge (Suwanee, GA), 13-10, in double overtime in the Class 5A semifinal; and then-No. 16 St. Xavier (Louisville, KY) lost to Trinity (Louisville, KY), 28-21, in the Kentucky 6A semifinal. All three teams dropped out of the USA Today Super 25.
The wins catapulted Plant (Tampa, FL) and Trinity (Louisville, KY) into the USA Today high school football rankings as No. 11 and No. 13, respectively.
No. 21 Camden County (Kingsland, GA) and No. 25 Union (Tulsa, OK) both moved into the USA Today Super 25. Camden County will now face Peachtree Ridge in the 5A finals, while Union is coming off of an Oklahoma 6A title win against archrival Jenks (OK), 34-20.
