Liz McDonald's emotional Corrie farewell

Coronation Street's Liz McDonald will bid an emotional farewell to the cobbles in the style of Bet Lynch.

The miniskirted pint-puller - who has been played by actress Bev Callard on and off since 1989 - will see her tear-jerking final scenes mirror those of the notorious Rovers Return landlady Bet (Julie Goodyear) when she said goodbye to the ITV1 soap in 1995.

According to The Sun newspaper, 'Corrie' viewers will see Liz finish her final shift at the pub, place the bar towels over the beer pumps and pause for a final scan of the Rovers before walking out of Street for good.

However, the bolshie blonde leaves the cobbles without saying her goodbyes to ex-husband Jim McDonald (Charles Lawson), who is facing 20 years behind bars after carrying out an attempted armed robbery on a bank in the hope of getting money to buy Liz's much-loved pub for her.

With the ex-con looking at the prospect of two decades in prison, he begs Liz to wait for him to complete his agonising stretch, but in a shock twist she flees the streets of Weatherfield for a new life in Spain.

Actress Bev told Inside Soap magazine: "Jim and Liz are a great couple. But they're too destructive together. They still love each other, and neither of them has ever been able to settle with anyone else. This may be their last chance at happiness, but they'll screw it up!

"It's amazing to follow in the footsteps of Julie Goodyear and I've enjoyed working with my on-screen grandchildren. But I'm looking forward to new challenges and seeing what life has to offer beyond Liz's famous miniskirts."
