7.2 Earthquake Strikes Off Coast of Japan, Small Tsunami Reported

About 30 minutes after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Japan, a small tsunami was reported at Ofunato port on the main island of Honshu. The Japanese Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory immediately after the tremor, which was located about 105 miles east of the city of Sendai at a depth of 8.8 miles. The height of the wave was expected to be no more than 19.6 inches high.

An emergency official in Iwate prefecture confirmed a 24 inch tsunami hit Ofunato. “We have confirmed that small tsunami have come up on the shores, but we have no reports of damage at this point," said Shinobu Nagano.

There were no immediate reports of injuries, deaths or damages caused by the earthquake.
