Baseball’s most prized free agent will be in pinstripes in 2009 as CC Sabathia and the New York Yankees are said to be on the verge of agreeing on a seven-year deal worth $160 million, a record contract for a pitcher.
Sabathia, 28, met with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman in San Francisco on Tuesday night and the two are said to have struck the deal.
The lefty started last year with the Cleveland Indians before being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers where he led the club to the playoffs after posting an 11-2 record and a 1.65 ERA in his 17 starts. Milwaukee extended an offer to Sabathia at the end of the season but he was courted by deeper pockets in Boston, Los Angeles and New York.
Sabathia, the 2007 AL Cy Young Award-winner, has been the main focus of the Yankees offseason after failing to reach the post season inlarge part to a mangled rotation.
