The army-backed government made the decision to lift the state of emergency just ahead of the country’s general election to be held on Dec. 29. Bangladesh has been under a state of emergency since January 2007 following violent clashes between political parties Bangladesh Nationalist Party and the Awami League.
As part of the state of emergency all political campaigning and rallies were banned but with the elections less than three weeks away that ban will be lifted on Dec. 12.
The two parties at the heart of the clashes that led to the state of emergency praised the announcement declaring it the only way to ensure free and fair elections. The BNP is led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia while the Awami League is led by another former Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina.
