Barack Obama Calls on Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to Resign

President-elect Barack Obama has called on Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to step down from office just one day after the state leader was arrested by federal officers on charges of corruption.

Blagojevich is alleged to have shopped Obama’s vacated senatorial seat following the 2008 presidential election. Obama had served as a senator from Illinois heading into the presidential election but after defeating John McCain he resigned his seat, giving Blagojevich the authority to fill the seat with his own appointment.

According to FBI agents Blagojevich tried to sell the seat and was said to have been in discussion with several people interested in offering the governor cash.

Following Tuesday’s arrest Obama called on Blagojevich to resign, stating the current circumstances prevented him from doing his job effectively. Obama has said he was in favor of the Illinois legislature holding a special election for the seat.

Blagojevich is likely to face numerous charges related to an investigation that has covered several years. He is said to have taken bribes for government contracts and appointments among other jobs.

Despite his troubles Blagojevich was released on bail Tuesday and returned to his office for work on Wednesday.
