US Sikh Community Asks FBI to Aid in Hunt for Gunmen

by Daun Lee

Two elderly men were gunned down in Elk Grove California when they were taking an afternoon walk. The US Sikh community offered a 30,000 dollar reward for any information leading to the capture of the gunmen. Although Sikhs aren’t Muslim they are often mistaken for followers of Islam because they are bearded and wear turbans. Basim Elkarra executive director of the Sacramento chapter of The Council of American-Islamic Relations cites that when there is unrest in the Middle East Sikhs are often targeted because they appear to be Islamic. The US Sikh community appealed to the FBI for help in finding the perpetrators.

The targeting of a person based on religious beliefs undermines the origins of the US a free nation. A country that prides itself on the freedoms that built the nation such as the freedom of religion, speech and assembly shouldn’t victimize other because they are different. The many immigrants who come to the US every year with guidance of an immigration attorney are also seeking freedom. There are many places across the globe where people don’t have the freedom to practice their individual spiritual beliefs. These people seek asylum in the US to escape persecution.

So many people have lost their lives protecting the freedoms that Americans enjoy. Immigrants across the globe seek citizenship with the assistance of immigration lawyers because of the religious freedoms available to Americans which are protected by the constitution. Aided by immigration attorneys people searching for enhanced freedoms can migrate to the US and have a better life.
