UN Report Indicates Rwanda and DR Congo Supporting Rebels

A UN report has found that Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo have been supporting rebel troops operating in the volatile eastern DR Congo region, accusations that both countries have strongly denied.

According to the report Rwanda has been aiding Tutsi rebels led by Gen. Laurent Nkunda while the DR Congo has been providing support to the Rwandan Hutu rebel militia, FLDR.

Nkunda has been leading an aggressive push against Congolese government-supported troops and FLDR forces in what he says are efforts to protect the minority Tutsi community. The UN report has indicated much of the artillery used by Nkunda’s troops have come from Rwanda. It is also alleged that Rwanda has supplied child soldiers to the Tutsi cause.

As for the FLDR, much of their funding has come from the Congolese government who has allegedly partnered with the Hutu militia to exploit the region’s mines. Much of the FLDR is made up of Hutus who fled Rwanda following the end of a genocidal campaign that left more than 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutus dead.

Fighting between the Tutsis and Hutus in the DR Congo has left more than 250,000 people displaced.
