Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow were named as the finalists for the 2008 Heisman Trophy winner, according to a press conference Wednesday.
Archie Griffin, the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner while at Ohio State, made the announcement during ESPN's Sportscenter on Wednesday.
The winner of the 74th annual Heisman Trophy will be announced on Monday, December 15 at the Nokia Theatre Times Square in New York. The prestigious award is given to college football's most outstanding player.
Bradford, the star quarterback from Oklahoma, and McCoy, the leader of Texas, have been in direct competition with each other all season. McCoy led the Longhorns to a 45-35 win against Bradford's Sooners in the Red River Shootout in October.
In the game, McCoy was 28-for-35 for 277 yards and a touchdown in the game, while Bradford was 28-of-39 for 387 yards and five touchdowns.
However, there was a big controversy after Oklahoma was selected to win the Big 12 South division after conference rules stated that the highest BCS team in a three-way tie should advance to the title game. OU, Texas and Texas Tech were all tied with 7-1 conference records.
Surprisingly, Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell and receiver Michael Crabtree were not included as Heisman Trophy finalists despite thoughts that both deserved it.
McCoy was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year this season, but was named second team All-Big 12 behind Bradford, who will face Tebow in the BCS National Championship Game on January 8.
Tebow, the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner, has an opportunity to become the first two-time Heisman winner since Griffin. Tebow led the Gators to the SEC Championship and is considered one of the best leaders in the nation.
McCoy has completed 291-of-375 passes for 3,445 yards and 32 TDs (7 INTs). He leads the Longhorns with 576 rushing yards and 10 TDs. He is third in the nation in passing efficiency (179.19) and sixth in total offense (335.08 yards per game).
Bradford completed 302-for-442passes for 4,464 yards and a Sooners record and nation-leading 48 TDs (6 INTs). He is second in the nation in passing efficiency (186.28) and fourth in total offense (348.38 yards per game).
Tebow has completed 174-of-268 passes for 2,515 yards for 28 TDs and just two interceptions. He ran for 564 yards and 12 TDs. He is fifth in the nation in passing efficiency (175.45) and leads an offense that is No. 1 in the SEC in rushing, scoring and total yards.
