Barack Obama Taps Steven Chu, Lisa Jackson, Carol Browner to Cabinet

President-elect Barack Obama will nominate Steven Chu, Lisa P. Jackson and Carol M. Browner to his cabinet, according to reports from Democratic officals on Wednesday.

Obama is set to nominate Chu for Energy secretary, Jackson for Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administrator and Browner as his energy "czar."

Chu, who won the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics, is currently Professor of Physics and Molecular and Cellular Biology of University of California-Berkeley and the director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Jackson is the Chief of Staff for New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine and was previously the Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). She is the first African American and first African American woman to serve as Chief of Staff to the Governor of New Jersey, a position she holds after serving 16 years with the EPA.

Browner, the current chair of the Audubon Society, served as Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency during the Clinton Administration. She is the longest-serving administrator in the history of the agency.

Obama is expected to make the announcements in the coming weeks, but it is still unclear whom Obama will tap for interior secretary.

On Thursday, Obama will hold a news conference in Chicago to name former Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle as secretary of Health and Human Services.

In other news, Obama has selected Nancy Sutley, the deputy mayor of Los Angeles, to lead the White House Council on Environmental Quality, according to transition officials on Wednesday.

Sutley is the first prominent member of the gay and lesbian community to earn a senior role in the Democrat's new administration.
