Suicide Bomber Kills 47 at Iraqi Restaurant, More than 100 Injured

At least 47 people were killed and more than 100 injured after a suspected suicide bomber detonated an explosive at a restaurant in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk.

The attack occurred around lunchtime at a Kurdish restaurant packed with families. There are conflicting reports about what caused the explosion as witnesses blamed a man who detonated a belt while a Kurdish official said a car bomb was used.

Kirkuk has seen a steady stream of violence with a mix of Turkmens, Kurds and Arabs calling the city home. The three groups have struggled for control of the oil-rich resources in the area. The Kurds are a significant majority in the city and have expressed a belief they should control the political sphere yet Iraqi Arabs and Turkmens have said the central government should rule.
