Despite a warning from the United Nations that the cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe was getting worse the country’s president Robert Mugabe has denied those reports and declared the African nation free of cholera.
Nearly 800 people in Zimbabwe have died from the recent cholera outbreak and more than 16,000 infected and with no infrastructure in place to halt the epidemic the death toll is expected to rise.
Mugabe has blamed Western nations for using the threat of a cholera outbreak to send troops into Zimbabwe in an effort to remove him from power. The 84-year-old leader declared in a national television address, “I am happy to say our doctors are being assisted by others and have now arrested cholera.”
As Zimbabwe continues to sink deeper into chaos the country’s health services have essentially vanished. Doctors have said they have no effective means of combating the epidemic as they have no medicine and the country has no fresh water supply to halt the spread.
Mugabe was defeated in the country’s presidential election by opposition MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai in March but it was determined that Tsvangirai had not won a large enough majority to avoid a run-off. Tsvangirai pulled out of that June vote just days before the polls opened declaring Mugabe was using violence and intimidation against MDC supporters.
The two have been part of an ongoing power-sharing debate that has produced agreements but never been fully realized.
